“I looked primarily at the three women sculpture named Okoh Women Series The three women are dressed in a luxurious African wax print fabric. I’ve seen such fabric worn in Nigeria… they are not workaday clothes. The women look mobile – as if dancing, though perhaps I am influenced by the video installation showing the artist herself dancing. The exhibition runs daily from 15th January – 22nd February 2018:

Over the last year, Ekua has been working with the collection at Chuck Gallery, meeting and speaking with the gallery’s international artists and immersing herself in the current dialogue in Nigeria around Contemporary and Modern Art Practice.
She has reflected on this experience using the creative lens of her sculpture and drawings.
Using skills first developed during her students days at St Martin’s and Hornsey Schools of Art, honed through several years as a Community Arts Enabler and Public Artist and mostly recently refined through a series of short residencies over the last 5 years including 6 weeks in Gran Canaria as Artist in Residence at Playhouse with Folami Bayode, Ekua has produced several unique pieces of artwork.

These new works now feature in her first Solo Show.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be an exciting participatory programme.
*Artist Talk – Thursday 25th January at 6pm with provocateur Sonia Hughes discussing the work with Ekua Bayunu
This free event will ask for a small voluntary donation of £3 to cover costs.
*Global Arts Manchester Networking Events
Networking events targeting adult artists returning to practice or new to practice, especially older women from African, African Caribbean, South and East Asian, Eastern European and Middle Eastern heritage.
This network is open to all genders, ethnicities and ages and will continue bimonthly from May 2018.
