Tyna Adebowale (Nigerian, 1982)

Tyna Adebowale

The conglomeration of coloured squares, tiny, flat and rough shapes carefully inlaid on Tyna Adebowale’s canvasses are masterly. Aesthetically similar to mosaics, the artist’s preferred use of this ‘fractured quality’ was triggered by her admiration of the stained glass windows found in western cathedrals. Between 2013 and 2014, she occasionally produced works with wash and dripping effect as though the paints were splashed on to the canvas.

Issues of gender and politics have continued to dominate themes she conveys in her work. Some of her recent exhibitions include: ‘The Maker: New Contemporaries’, 2013; African Artists’ Foundation, Lagos, and ‘The Archive: Static, Embodied, Practiced’. (3rd International Art Programme, Accra). She recently concluded an MFA programme in Ghana.

Tyna Adebowale studied painting at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo state. She lives and works in Lagos and Abuja.
