WEDNESDAY, 16TH JANUARY, 2019. 6:00 – 8:00 PM
Artists in Conversation explores the prevalent themes and artistic influences within contemporary African art through candid in-depth discussions with leading artists, thinkers and curators. The conversations, programmed by Chukwudi Onwudiwe serve as an exposition into the emergence of African Art in the contemporary art scene.
In preparation for their respective solo exhibitions, Manchester -based local artists, Alison Hill and Josephe Cocles, will participate in a public talk at Chuck Gallery on the evening of the 16th of January. You are specially invited to attend this inaugural event which promises to pique and excite your interest in contemporary African art and culture.
Josephe’s discovery of art began with a curious investigation into her identity after she discovered Senegalese masks that her mother had acquired on a trip across Africa. Selected to study at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of 19, she began an exploration into the themes of history, archaeology and pre-Columbian influences that now reflect in her dynamic and mystic approach to artistic expression. With pieces that draw from the hieroglyphs found in ancient Egyptian tombs and prehistoric cave markings, Josephe has continuously used symbolism and the African legacy to elevate herself and her viewers in over 20 national and international exhibitions.
By using different stitches to create texture, and layers to create density and form, Alison Hill has developed her own style of embroidery that employs the sewing machine as a set of pastels or crayons.
Trained in Design Technology at Sunderland University, Alison uses her history of creativity and resourcefulness to mimic the zest for life which she observed in traditional African dancers during the Billingham International Folk Festival. Her aim with her art is to create nostalgic pieces that transport the soul to that moment in time – ‘a happier time’.
